The current live-action release Cinderella, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, two Pixar animated films, a live-action Jungle Book adaptation, Tomorrowland, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens combine for one of the most dominating release slates of any studio in recent memory. You can bet that this year's box office will see investors flocking to Disney, though, as the studio has half a dozen major releases all destined to be huge blockbusters, on its way toward a probable record-breaking year. But over time, Miller's sense of Daredevil came fully into its own, and I think his Daredevil work is actually his greatest comic writing - in fact, I even feel it eventually came to influence his Batman work when Miller wrote Batman: Year One, with a lot of his Daredevil sensibilities coming through in that story. When Miller began writing Daredevil comics, he often had Batman on his mind, and editors would sometimes have to remind him that certain story or character elements were too similar to the Dark Detective. The episodes are like mini-movies, and taken together the first two episodes could have been released almost as-is - with only a few minor tweaks to add some cinematic sense of scale - and it would've been hailed as one of Marvel's best films to date.Daredevil is the equivalent of Frank Miller's writing style and sense of storytelling come vividly to life - although Miller didn't work on this show, to be clear, and all credit for the series' fantastic writing goes to Drew Goddard. And Rosario Dawson's "Night Nurse" gets a terrific mini-origin of her own that's one of the best for any supporting character in the genre, which was totally unexpected and speaks to the amount of thought and care that went into crafting this series.Whatever I expected - and I already expected a lot, based on what we'd seen in advance and my own personal love of the Daredevil comics - Daredevil surpassed those expectations by a wide margin. Deborah Ann Woll as that female lead, Karen Page, mixes sincerity with a whiff of unpredictability. Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson is likewise spot-on casting and has some wonderful moments where his subtle reactions to the female lead reveal a great deal of stirring conflicting emotions. By the end of the pilot episode, you'll know Charlie Cox is the guy we've been waiting for to bring Daredevil and Matthew Murdock to life. Here, they are creating a lean, mean, street-level approach to superhero storytelling that reflects an entirely different aspect of life in the Marvel cinematic universe. The pairing with Netflix shows the studio's determination to seek the precise right approach and medium for introducing each character into the live-action fold, and proves yet again that Marvel knows exactly what it's doing and just keeps getting better at it. The opening also gives us our first glimpse of the eventual traditional costume Daredevil will some day don, and it's a wonderful tease.Marvel continues to take risks and defy attempts to pigeonhole their productions and their intentions as "humorous kidstuff" or mere popcorn fluff. Fans who love The Flash will undoubtedly recognize in Daredevil another superhero series that fully realizes the grandest possibilities of the genre on television, and which many will instantly hail as the standard by which all others will now be judged. It's even got a gorgeous, unsettling opening credit sequence that hints at the film's Catholic-Gothic undertones and the themes of sin, forgiveness, downfall, and redemption, and the eternal conflict between those concepts as they exist simultaneously within us - and within the show's hero, of course.
